From The Classroom

From Key Stage 2 & 3

It has been a very short but eventful term for key stage 2 and 3. Apart from the many successful extra curricular activities we had this term (thank you all for you support), we were able to enter our students to our first ever math contest and they thoroughly enjoyed the experience. We had our SATs for the year 6 class done this term and we had 100% pass rate in both Math and English. It is encouraging to report that we managed to have 2 students achieving the highest level which is level 5 in Math and 3 in English. The year 9 students also did their SATs and had a strong performance, as all of them achieved the required level. Moving ahead, we are pleased to announce that we are very ready for key stage 4! The students have already chosen the subjects they wish to sit for in their O-level exams. They will have the next two years to prepare for the exam which they will do at the end of year 11. We again are very grateful to all of you for the confidence and support you have given to us and may you all have a great holiday season.

From Kindergarten & Keystage 1:

Each dawn holds a new hope for a new plan, making the start of each day the start of a new life. Our academic year began just the other day and there was the excitement of a new class, new teachers, new toys, books, etc. As we now come to the close of it, we wish to thank you all for your support in all areas.

-Its been a joy to see teachers love children for who they are and not for what they do; parents helping with homework and projects.

-We are proud of our year twos who are now ready to move on to the next key stage and we say CONGRATULATIONS!!!

-Have yourselves a fun filled holiday with your precious children.

From Kumon:

THE SUMMER CHALLENGE

This year we have a very unique situation where a special Soccer Challenge has been formulated to make the most of an unusually long school holiday.

Purpose of the Special Soccer Challenge

Ø  Winning the game means scoring goals.

Ø  Winning in life means setting, and achieving, goals.

This is the clear message for our Special Soccer Challenge.

During the World Cup period, we want our students to be winners by keeping a steady pace in their Kumon progress, and achieving excellent results through consistent daily study.

Before breaking for the June holidays, we will give each student directions to get them successfully through the World Cup period.

Immediately after this, we shall run a free trial campaign for two weeks i.e. from 16th -29thDon’t miss this golden opportunity! August.

Opportunity is missed by most because it is dressed in overalls and looks like work”

From the Resource Centre/Library:

All students have been assigned library/borrowing cards and are free to borrow books to enhance their reading skills. The students have been reading through the term though we did not have any major events. Reading competition will be on next term and the best class and student will be rewarded. We request you to work hand in hand with us by encouraging your children to borrow books and also by buying them some to read in the house and having them read to you. We welcome donations in book form to help build our resource centre.

Clubs:

This year Potterhouse School had the pleasure of being represented at the Middle School Model United Nations (MSMUN) held at the United Nations Office Nairobi (UNON) in January. We had a delegation of 12 students, representing 3 countries: Estonia, Madagascar and East Timor. Resolutions from two of the countries were debated during the 3-day conference, and we are proud to say that one of our resolutions (from Madagascar) received a best resolution award from the Health Committee. This was a great step for the school and the students. We look forward to even greater things next year.

Languages Department:

This term’s spelling bee was a success as in previous terms, with Serengeti taking the lead. We have also had the wheel of knowledge this term which tested the students’ knowledge in various aspects of English language.

We are also very happy with the key stage two SAT results that were marked collectively with teachers from various BNC schools. We are proud to announce that four of our students attained level 5, with 5 being the highest level.

ICT WORLD:

The most interesting subject to children, playing as they learn; student in year one and two enjoy drawing and painting shapes. Their unpredictable creativity, in drawing and painting, at this stage is so interesting. The keyboard being a not easy to handle device and keys not easy to locate especially the use of Caps Lock and Shift keys for them it is a climbed mountain. The shutting down of a computer which is seen as the easiest duty after use seems to confuse a computer with a television set.

In key stage two and three, students are interested in knowing new things each other day. From computer alphabet, application software, network, application of ICT, to effects ICT has on society; ICT learning will continually remain perpetual. This is simply because today’s world is dominated by technology, and the world of computing is changing constantly. For example the other day students were using Microsoft Office 2003 but today they are using Microsoft Office 2007 just to prepare the learner to leave in the real world and give an idea of just how important technology is. We stick on nothing but embracing new ideas to make us a better institution.
