Cat had just
taken a sumptuous meal of chicken for lunch. He felt very sleepy and lazy after
the meal. To stay awake, he decided to pay mouse a visit at mouse’s favourite
hole behind the sofa. Mouse was very careful not to get too close to the
entrance of his cosy home when cat called up on him. “Say brother mouse” began
cat on sensing that mouse was nearby. “What’s your favourite pass time
activity?” asked cat. After deep thought, mouse replied, “Munching at chunks of
cheese I guess.” “And what’s yours?” mouse quickly asked cat in a bid to get
even. “Well,” cat replied feigning serious thought “chasing after mice and
later enjoying the satisfaction of having a full tummy after a nice mice meal
is my thing.”
Like cat, I
wish most people could embrace physical exercise as a most favourite activity
and enjoy its benefits of good health and deep understanding of the value of
effort and discipline that goes into exercise.
What a term
it has been at Potterhouse especially with the startling performance and
tremendous improvement of the Potterhouse Soccer Academy. In their first match
of the term, they beat Waldorf school 6-1, Little Scholars 3-0, German school
5-2, St. Austin’s 3-0 and Nairobi
Jaffrey 1-0. They lost to Aga Khan High school 0-1 and Rusinga 0-1.The team
proved its prowess in a friendly match against Ujuzi Stars on 19th
June at Parklands sports club by beating them 10-2 and 4-0 in the under-8 and
10 categories respectively. Ujuzi stars were in Spain last season for a sports
camp. Why not the Potterhouse Soccer Academy?
Our soccer
academy now draws its membership from the wider Runda community rather than
just Potterhouse as had been the case at its formation. It also incorporates
eight kids talented in soccer who hail from disadvantaged families within our
community as part of our social responsibility.
In a bid to
sustain continuous improvement in the soccer club’s performance, the sports
department will restructure the club in September. This will be by way of
involving parents in management and thereby help in the attainment of our
vision to become the best soccer academy in our region. I urge the entire
Potterhouse fraternity to support the club as it seeks to scale the very
heights of gamesmanship. Reading about Mariga or Oliech, you’ll discover that
the success of these two Kenyan soccer stars and international players is as a
result of years of hard work that started at a tender age. May it be so for our
young ones at Potterhouse.
The swimming
club has inicitiated a ‘Swim for life’ programme where all the kids in the club
have learnt to swim. The more experienced swimmers are perfecting their strokes
by and by.
Most notable
among sporting activities lined out ahead of us is a sports camp that will be
held right here at Potterhouse! It is scheduled to run from 2nd to
13th August. Both boys and girls of all ages and skill levels are
expected to participate in numerous activities such as swimming. The camp is
aimed at providing a perfect, healthy and fun alternative to utilise the coming
holiday. Sports are an important part of a healthy lifestyle for children and
therefore important for a parent to encourage participation of a child in
sporting events.
The sports
camp participants will not only have fun but will also be nurturing their
socializing skills while boosting their confidence levels. Through
participation in the many activities, participants will learn new and
interesting things daily. This will help them develop interest in various
sports especially at their early ages and enable them live active and healthy
lives.
Through
banding together with other like minded children and professional coaches, one
of the things that the children will learn at the camp is looking at various
sports from an athletic perspective. The coaches will provide individual
attention and one-on-one skill building to the children so as to help them
excel in the sports.
Games
activities for next term include cricket, rounders, soccer for the soccer
academy, swimming, lawn tennis and badminton. I wish you a healthy and fit holiday.
God bless you abundantly.
Mr. Kaberu,
SPORTS COORDINATOR
